The Studio for electroacoustic Music Weimar was founded in 1997 on the basis of a collaboration between the University of Music FRANZ LISZT and the Bauhaus University Weimar. The goal of this cooperation was to extend the curriculum of both institutions with a course of studies in electroacoustic composition and sound design. Today, SeaM offers an open and versatile environment for the production and presentation of electroacoustic music as well as for the research and development of new artistic strategies in the area of electroacoustics. The projection of sound in space and the design of „sound spaces“ has always played a central role in the studio’s activities.
SeaM facilities include a high quality multi-channel production studio as well as a workshop studio housing a permanent 40-channel high-performance loudspeaker orchestra for the presentation of acousmatic music. In 2013-14 an IOSONO-system was added to the workshop facility. The IOSONO-system, used principally in cinema, represents a novel variation of 3D sound projection. The workshop studio is complemented by several separate project spaces for work in the areas of live electronics and sound installation.
A high-quality multi-channel production studio and an accompanying facility for the recording of sound objects and instrumental sounds are situated in the main building of the University of Music FRANZ LISZT. All SeaM studios are used by students of Media Arts and Design at the Bauhaus University as well as by students of electroacoustic composition at the Franz Liszt University. In the studios, students realize all kind of projects in the areas of electroacoustic composition and sound art. At the end of each semester new student productions are presented in public concerts and installations.
